Commentary:
As with anything
online the responsibility of safety for our
children falls totally on the shoulders of the
parent. Kids need to be taught the dangers of
"over-networking" on web sites like MySpace.com
and even with the most attentive parents, kids
can still access this web site and post too much
information. My own experience taught me that if
your kids don't want to be found by you there
are ways to disguise themselves to be
un-findable. No one can guarantee that your kids
aren't accessing the MySpace community from a
friends house as my own child did. We found her
page on accident.
The bottom line
is, MySpace may be a great tool for some but in
my opinion the risks outweigh the good. My
opinion is that the site has become too
dangerous for teens and tweens. I restrict my
kids from utilizing the site.
What made me
decide to do this? I won't tell you...I'll show
you.
Go to
Myspace.com and pretend your a teenage girl
looking for other girls your age in the area to
network with. Search for 14-years old, female,
cheerleader. Look at what your results are
and then ask yourself...do you really want your
kid on this web site?
The proof is in
the pudding...the site is loaded with sex
saturated, suggestive ads, many of which are
really YOUNG girls!! My question is...WHERE ARE
THERE PARENTS? What or WHO is protecting these
little girls from the dangers that lurk just
beyond their monitor? Once a child is victimized
it's too late to undo the life changing damage
that will be done.
Call me
over-protective but I'll sleep better knowing my
teen daughters aren't allowing themselves to be
exploited on Myspace.
